David Kelly
Today we discussed how an artist can explore Surface to aid our grade 11 unit. Both looking at the physical surface or something and looking beyond it. Seeing what lies behind it and what meanings can be found and made.

Jesse Paul Wright and Connor Quinn
Over the past 2 years I have had the absolute pleasure of working with Jesse and Connor on our school productions. I have loved how they inject their creative energy into the whole school, bringing passion and enthusiasm. My contribution is limited to make up and costumes, but I really enjoy being able to be a part of something in that brings together the whole school. I love being able to speak to the students about their passion and engage them in new experiences. Jesse and Connor create the whole set and stage from scratch opening up beautiful lesson about craft, dedication and perseverance. The result of this short 2 month residency can be seen in the performances, but also around the school as set pieces are reimagined and given a new life. I would recommend encouraging this experience, for yourself if not a production.
BHX 2017 :
Arts Workshop with Amanda Clyne

Lesson 1: Collage Consequences.
I love this activity. Each students picks from a co-generated list of words and created a collage using the ones that interested them the most on it.

IBDP Visual Arts Prep.
Lesson 1: Observational Drawing
Lesson 2: 50 explorations
Lesson 3: 50 Continued and creativity
Lesson 4: Jeju Museum
Lesson 5: Process Portfolio.
Corrina Goutos- Contemporary Metal Smith:
Lost Wax Jewellery Workshop.
I was so excited that Corrina Goutos, who I met at Mauerpark, agreed to come and run a workshop in the school.
I have loved having her work with the group of staff and students.
Pre-task:
The following list is a collection of words (or concepts) relating to the process of casting, or the meaning of the symbol of the ring or circle. Please choose one, or more, words from the list and make a visual mindmap that relates to one or more of these aspects
-Reveal -Transformation -Imitation -Foreseen vs. Unexpected -Intimacy -Memory/Memorial object -Wholeness/Balance -Origin -Cycles -Infinity/Eternity/Permanence -Heritage -Mobility/Movement -Security/Protection -Sacred Bond -Commitment/Devotion -Hand vs. Machine
Lesson 1
Introduction to casting and the work of the Corrina Goutos. Play with the media and make rings.
Lesson 2
Explore splash casting: By dropping melted wax into cold water it captures the moment in some wonderful forms.
Develop final idea and how to link to their concepts
Lesson 3
Complete the creation of the ring and prepare it for casting.
[Wait for a week in sweet anticipation]
Lesson 4
Final rings are brought back from the casting workshop and then polished.
10-11-15
So.. I know that I should be focused on my job and getting my flat in order, but I am on a high from the class and all I want to do is create more work. It is the best feeling ever being inspired like this.
I really enjoyed the opportunity to play and explore the media. I think that being able to get a feel for the way the media is handled and reacts, is a really good place to start. It was really interesting to see what happened to the media, what it did and what I could and couldn't control. I came to the workshop with images of icebergs and rocks. I think you can see the way that transfers into the ring. I kept forgetting that I need to look at the top of the ring and consider how it will look when it is worn. It was a bit chunky in the end for my taste. It is a shame that the details are not captured in the photos.
Lesson 1: My initial wax explorations
Splash casting and conclusions (LESSON 2)
I loved this. It was so interesting to see the way that the wax could be changed and distorted. I liked the way that I could really explore and play with this, but had no control over what happened. You dripped and poured at different speeds and then wait until it is turned over to see what happens. It is a pure moment that was captured. It is motion and reaction...but not always pretty. A lot had to be remelted, and there were a lot of 'I like it.. but I have no idea what I would do with it!!' conversations.
We started to look at the concepts that we were working with and thought about how that could manifest in these techniques or into jewelry. I found that having these conversations with Corrina were great. She is a great listener and facilitates these sort of critical dialogues from students. They maintained the ownership of the outcomes and the ideas, she did not tell them what they should think, just discussed with them.

Final creation (lesson 3)
I made about 15 outcomes. I loved it. I was so engaged with the whole process
Polishing final products
We had send of some to be made bronze and some to be cast in silver. Luckily, Corrina had started to carve from the ring tree to make sure that that we could get the work done in the lesson. It was so exciting to see our creations returned and see then in metal.
Here are some examples of completed rings from different people within the group which were cast in bronze. I was so impressed by how diverse, individual and beautiful they were! The images were all taken of the classes outcomes.
