Hello! Lovely to meet you
I graduated from Northumbria University in 2010 with a 2:1 in Fine Art. I was always really inquisitive and wanted to push the boundary of what I knew the media could do and what I wanted, or needed from it. At university I was exploring shape, media and message and how these three elements are intrinsically linked. I found that this could enhance or undermine a piece, so was more interested in the exploration than the "outcomes" until I had worked out what it was I was wanting to say. I developed a love/hate relationship with my course, I didn't know what I was doing and felt like an artists should. Did that mean I wasn't an artist? I realized that the exploration was integral to me finding my voice and my vision. I love the aspect of discovery in investigation, especially the role of play. This has had a distinct impact on pedagogy. I want students to discover through exploration of the media and the imagery. I consider the ownership of outcomes vital for meaningful discoveries and connections to be made. I therefore, want to be a teacher that teaches through investigation, rather than a singular example. I want to show students how artists work, to be become an artist, not just regurgitate what was already available.
I believe every student is an artist, but fear and confidence can be a barrier. It is imperative to me that my classroom is a positive and supportive working environment, where everyone feels that they can take risks, learn from mistakes. There is no negativity allowed.
You need to find something you love and do more of that.
